Those who grew up with infamous Harry Potter books and movie series know very well how the Internet took off with continuation stories after each installment. More than 650,000 stories have been developed for the Harry Potter series. Same thing is happening with Google’s Android open source software which allow the free use of it and to modify, add, and use it in any applications. Now Amazon is taking a page out of these experiences. It is allowing dreamers to continue fan fiction further with The Vampire Diaries, Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars allowing fans to write short stories and novels.
Fan fiction (is called Fanfic on the Web) websites have been developing within the last decade or so. One problem for many is copyright laws. Amazon’s Kindle World has obtained the right for the project promising to share profits with the original owners of the work and also with the new work. So far Amazon has authorized 50 books for fan fiction. Beyond books, the opportunities are endless. This can be extended to movies, TV shows, and even video games. Amazon’s success may encourage others like Barns & Noble and Apple to get into the fan fiction world.
